Editing Blog 2
Being one of two editors, communication is key to efficiency. It is important that the end product is one that we both (alongside our third groupmate) are happy with. This blog is going to be a recount of our editor meetings where we discuss our vision for the blog and give suggestions to one another. We try not to interfere with each other’s editing process too often; once we pass the file to each other, we kind of let each other have free reign. Our reasoning behind this is to avoid “backseat editing”. Rather than constantly chirping in each other’s ear while editing we try to give a general explanation of our desired outcomes and we try to work off each other’s suggestions. We often edit in Discord calls however. Discord is an application that allows us to livestream our editing process to each other and communicate audibly while doing so. When in these calls the editor that is not actively editing the film typically just mutes themself and stands by until the other editor has a question, which is usually when a major change is about to be made or a significant addition is going to be done. I think that the way we decided to split the workload was very intelligent. Having two editors reduces the stress on each individual. Moreover, editing in this manner encourages habits that will lead to healthy group morale. We are more communicative in all areas of our group work because of our constant discussions about even trivial things at times. Our third group member Grant Cipollone does not participate in editing the film but his input is obviously very important as well. We take his broad suggestions into account and try to implement them into the film. In one particular meeting on Discord, the three of us got into a slight disagreement about transitions. I am an advocate of many transitions, such as crossfades and wipes, while my group members wanted the film to have more cuts. When most groups would fight over such a thing, the three of us came to a compromise quite quickly and our film will contain a nice variety of cuts as well as other transitions. Our mindsets are always geared towards compromise and I am thankful to have group members who are not adamant on having things one particular way.
