Short Film: Undertaker Analysis

 


Undertaker is a Netflix Short Film that features the WWE wrestler, the Undertaker. The production isn't perfect but it was easy to find and it is a mystery horror.  I want my film to be mystery and horror so, watching the Undertaker gave me valuable insight.  I also found it interesting to try and solve the mystery at the same time.

Common Sounds- There are hastily thrown together sound effects as well as the dialogue between characters. Busy background sounds if that makes sense.  Common Mis-en-scene- Costumes for all the characters such as the Undertakers descriptive outfit. As well as the mansion/house it takes place in. There are a lot of props as well for the challenges.  Common Editing- So many jump cuts here. Voice overs are also common.  Elements of Genre I like- I like how effective this was with the clearly lower budget and how the mystery was set up so you truly still didn't know at the end.

Elements I didn't like- Although I gave it some praise, the movie truly has a very low production value with cheesy acting and not that great themes. This isn't a good film but I thought I would include it because its a mystery.

Final Task Filming/Editing: Adjusting to Schedules and Identifying Music

 Adjusting to Schedules and Identifying Music      Filming did not go as I'd previously scheduled. 11th graders at our school had to take the SAT on March 3rd, 2021. I had planned for filming to begin on March 3rd  and continue into March 4th, however my other participants did not feel that they could come out to film after taking the test. This is understandable, and I respect the fact that they may need some down time after being tested for 5 hours. In the meantime, I began research on possible music choices that I could use in my film. I'm going to need three different types of background music in my film: upbeat hip hop music, casual hip-hop music, and dramatic music. For the hip-hop instrumentals, I looked into Homage Beats, who is a beat producer who makes a wide variety of hip hop beats. Genre Research: White Men Can't Jump

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?    The movie, despite having some comedy within it, has serious undertones. The topics within the movie are a few of the typical topics that are tackled within drama films: financial instability, addiction, and racial politics. The movie has many funny one liners and comedic scenes, but you cannot avoid the fact that Sidney's family is struggling financially and he does not have the funds to move them to a safer part of Los Angeles, and Billy is in some severe debt to mobsters and also has a gambling addiction. The two, seemingly very different characters, use basketball as a common ground to build a friendship and create a financial foundation that they have not had for a while. The film shows that there will always be a point at which two people can cooperate regardless of how different their backgrounds are.
